Lydia here, your new Miss Teenage Halton for 2017!

Welcome to my blog! You may want to bookmark this site so you can easily check in on what I’ll be up to this year! Before I talk about what I plan to do this year, I’ll tell you a little bit about myself…

A little bit about me…

I am lucky to live in beautiful downtown Burlington and be educated at the oldest school in Burlington, Burlington Central High School! I’m 15 years old and I live with my amazing mom, older sister and younger brother. One very unique thing about me is that I am a global child. I have blood relations coming from 5 different continents, and I lived in New Zealand for over 9 years, making it 6 different continents I can represent! Whenever there is a form I fill out for my ethnicity, I can only claim that I am mixed. I love learning new things, especially in science. I am in grade 10, and working towards my ultimate career goal of being an anesthetist and also using my medical knowledge in third world countries. I love writing poetry and in the past year I have won two awards in my community for my work. I believe language is such a beautiful, diverse thing, and I really enjoy learning French in school and hope to become fluent in it.

Entering Miss Teenage Ontario…

Entering a beauty pageant was never on my agenda. I’ve never considered myself a “beauty queen” and I overlooked pageants in general. One day I saw an advertisement for Miss Teenage Canada and I clicked on it. That decision changed my life for the better. I discovered that beauty pageants are so much more than just wearing pretty dresses and putting on makeup (this part is fun!), but it is also about representing your community and being an ambassador for the things you care about. I have always had a special place in my heart for teenagers struggling with mental health, as I have struggled with this myself. I was diagnosed with anorexia, depression and anxiety when I was 14, and every day hasn’t always been easy. I am lucky enough to have a supportive family who provides me with access to services that help me, but I recognize it is not that way for all teens. When I saw that I was eligible for Miss Teenage Canada, I thought, why not put myself out there to stand up for people who need it? Why not try something new? It can’t hurt to try! I applied that same day, and I was accepted to the competition. On January 22nd, I competed in the Ontario provincial competition, and I was chosen as one of 12 finalists to compete for Miss Teenage Canada, and given the title of Miss Teenage Halton 2017!

What I plan to do with my title…

For me, the most important part of this year is what I am going to do with my title. My goal is to help be a part of reducing the negative stigma around teen mental health, and I also want to volunteer as much as I can. MTC-W has chosen WE Free The Children as our cause for fundraising! I have already raised $100 from a Valentine’s Day bake sale at my school to share the love, and I can’t wait to raise even more!
